In the Spring of 2013, Sailaja Joshi was on a mission to complete her baby registry in preparation for the arrival of her first child. In connection with her “library” themed baby shower, Sailaja went on the hunt to find books about Indian culture that she could share with her newborn daughter. At the end of her search, Sailaja found very few books which spoke to her Indian heritage. Of those she did find, she realized none of them took into account the developmental needs of a growing child. Recognizing this gap in children’s literature, the idea for Bharat Babies was born.
The mission of Bharat Babies is simple: design and produce developmentally appropriate books that tell the The vision of Bharat Babies comes straight from Sailaja’s heart: to design and produce developmentally appropriate books that tell the stories of India’s heritage for children from birth through elementary school.
At Bharat Babies, I’ve been given the task of truly building the brand from the ground up. Work began with the logo and has expanded to business cards, letterheads, stickers, bookmarks, and more. Ultimately, my goal is to develop Bharat Babies into a leading brand in the publishing industry. Another important aspect of my work for Bharat Babies was to build a website on Shopify and maintain product inventory as well as troubleshoot and fix other general IT issues that may arise. I also find and onboard illustrators I feel will enhance our stories and tell them in visually striking ways. I have helped grow Bharat Babies from three co-founders to a team of nine people.
